Interesting facts: Toxic chemicals in every day American living (ongoing)

This is an ongoing article, updated as & when we discover new facts that need to be widely known.

The UGLY

  • More than 80,000 chemicals are registered in the US for use across many industries.
  • Fewer than 10% have been tested for effects on human health. US law for the personal care industry (including skin care, cosmetics), does not require testing for health effects before ingredients go on the market.
  • The European Union’s law bans 1,328 chemicals from cosmetics. These chemicals were banned because they are known or suspected to cause cancer, genetic mutation, reproductive harm or birth defects. The EU law for chemicals says when there is much, credible evidence of danger to human or environmental health, protective action should be taken despite continuing scientific uncertainty.
  • In comparison, the U.S. FDA has only banned or restricted 11 chemicals from cosmetics.

The BAD

  • The poor US chemical regulatory environment for personal care products has also caused misleading product labeling. For example, personal care products labeled “organic”, “natural” can include toxic chemicals that can be harmful to an individual’s health. But they are not required to disclose them on their labels.

The GOOD

  • Toxicology in the 21st century (Tox21) is a federal collaboration to develop better toxicity assessment methods. These methods may quickly and efficiently test whether certain chemical compounds have the potential to disrupt processes in the human body that may lead to negative health effects.
  • The FIGO (International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics) issues a warning on exposure to environmental chemicals for reproductive goals. (2015)
  • The Endocrine Society issues a warning on Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals in many consumer products including beauty, household products, and their impact on the Female reproduction.
